Dentistry with Nitrous Oxide

Dentistry with Nitrous Oxide

Here at our office we offer Nitrous Oxide, also known as “laughing gas” during extractions, restorations and/or cleanings. Nitrous Oxide is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose to help you relax and feel more comfortable. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off immediately after the mask is removed.
Nitrous Oxide, is widely used in dentistry to help manage pain and anxiety during dental procedures. It’s a safe, effective method to make dental visits more comfortable for patients who experience anxiety or fear about dental treatment.

Anxiety Reduction

Nitrous oxide is excellent for reducing or eliminating anxiety that some patients may feel during dental procedures. It helps them stay calm and relaxed, yet fully conscious and able to communicate with the dentist.

Pain Management

It provides mild pain relief, which helps patients endure procedures that may cause discomfort.

Control of Gag Reflex

For patients who have a strong gag reflex that interferes with dental treatment, nitrous oxide can help suppress this reflex, making it easier to perform the necessary work.

Quick Onset

The effects of nitrous oxide start within a few minutes of inhalation. The dentist can adjust the concentration in real time to ensure comfort.

Short Recovery Time

After the procedure, nitrous oxide is turned off, and patients are given pure oxygen to breathe for five minutes to clear out any remaining gas. Recovery is quick, allowing patients to drive themselves home from the appointment.

Appropriate Use and Safety

Nitrous oxide is considered safe for most patients, including children, and can be adjusted in concentration. The dentist will review a patient’s medical history to ensure there are no conditions that would preclude the use of nitrous oxide, such as respiratory conditions, pregnancy, or certain medications.

Prevent Tooth Damage

Night guards act as a protective layer between the upper and lower teeth to prevent wear and tear from grinding, which can lead to chipped, flattened, cracked, or overly sensitive teeth.

Reduce Jaw Tension and Pain

By cushioning the muscles in the jaw, night guards alleviate the stress and tension caused by clenching, helping to reduce jaw pain and discomfort associated with TMJ disorders.

Improve Sleep Patterns

By minimizing teeth grinding and jaw clenching, night guards can also contribute to a more comfortable and restful sleep.

Prevent Snoring

They can help adjust the position of the jaw and thus may aid in reducing snoring, contributing to better sleep for both the wearer and their sleep partners.
